Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)- a law
ensuring services to children with disabilities throughout the nation.
There are many ways to adapt this lesson plan to students with varying abilities. Here are a couple examples:
- For a student with a hearing impairment we will have the student sit as close to the teacher as possible. The teacher will also provide written instructions for everything that is required. Also there will be a detailed sheet with step by step instructions for the student to look through. There will be individual demos for parts that are difficult for the student to understand, and the child will write down any questions he or she may have at any moment so that they get answered by the end of class.
- For a gifted and talented student there will be more options for him or her to choose from. For example, instead of using a canvas and gluing down the thread he or she can have the choice of using wood and also incorporating nails to tie the thread around on a wooden board. The student will also have the option of using a bigger size board and after discussing with the teacher he or she can use any material as long as it correlates with gender roles. Gifted students may also research and utilize other styles of embroidery to enhance their understanding of this style of art making.
