This handout will be printed out and handed to every student so they are aware of the amount of time they have to work on this project. This will also help students with time management and with any questions they have about the project requirements.
Stringing us all along
Objective: Create a mixed media painting that explores the idea of power in the media, specifically gender roles.
Materials: magazines, scissors, glue, paint (any color you think will work with your piece) canvas or wood board, embroidery thread, nails, or any material that you will like to incorporate as long as it has meaning behind the use
Timeline:
Day 1: Begin to cut out images from magazines that everyone brought in or magazines that the teacher provided. These images should have a purpose that will explore the idea of gender roles.
At the end of today you should have a couple of images cut out. Store them in your folder and put them back in the bin. Make sure your name is on the canvas and store them in the bin.
Day 2: Begin class by painting on your canvas. Remember that the colors you choose will need to tie in with your objective. When you’re done painting, let them dry on the drying shelf. Make sure you’re name is on the back! Continue to cut out images from magazines and begin to map out where you would like these images to go. Also start to think of a word or phrase that you will like to incorporate either with paint or sewing, your choice!
At the end of today your canvas should be painted and stored on the drying rack. You should have also collected more images for your painting.
Day 3: Begin class with a demo the start to glue down images on your canvas and begin to choose a color of your thread
Day 4: Today is a full work day. We will be walking around so ask for help if you need it!
Day 5: Today is another full work day. Any questions so far? If you are ahead you may begin embroidery.
At the end of today you will each have a small partner critique. You will use sticky notes to make at least 2 helpful suggestions to improve their partners work
Day 6: This is your last day to work. Make sure you have all the embroidery and text done. Any last questions??? Be ready to critique on the last day.
