NJ Core Curriculum Content Standards (NJCCCS) for Visual & Performing Arts
The creative process:
1.1.12.D.1 - Distinguish innovative applications of the elements of art and principles of design in visual artworks from diverse cultural perspectives and identify specific cross-cultural themes.
- Students will learn innovative ways to add texture to their work by incorporating embroidery and collage. They will also explore how our culture depicts gender roles through the media.
Performance:
1.3.12.D.2 - Produce an original body of artwork in one or more art mediums that demonstrates mastery of visual literacy, methods, techniques, and cultural understanding
- Students will create a mixed media painting that will incorporate paint, collage and embroidery and will learn about texture and layering through the process. They will understand the meaning of using paint and embroidery as a way of uniting two genders.

Technology:
8.1.12.E.2 - Predict the impact on society of unethical use of digital tools, based on research and working with peers and experts in the field.
- Students will learn how the media influences societies creation of gender roles and expectations. By looking at contemporary artists that use the media as their influence students will learn how to take current events and make them into the subject of their art making, creating deeper meaning within their art.
Language Arts Literacy:
3.5.12.A.2 - Identify and evaluate how a media product expresses the values of the culture that produced it.
- The students will be able to understand how the media portrays genders in such subtle ways that sometimes it goes unnoticed. They will be able to explore deeper how the media produces these norms that people feel the need to conform to through their products.
