My reflection
With this being my first lesson plan, there were many things that were difficult. However I think this lesson plan is very well thought out and detail oriented. We made sure that our step by step instructions were detailed and as specific as possible so that someone who has never done something like this will be able to follow along. This lesson plan was inspired by the works of Ghada Amer who explores power in her work. She uses magazine clippings to collage onto her paintings. I thought it was a good idea to have students use magazine clippings to create a painting because they can use magazines that relate to them. The students will be more engaged by using real time magazines that are out in the public today. In a high school level, students are more aware of gender roles and media manipulation of these roles. They will be able to identify and relate with their projects on a more personal level. I think this lesson plan has many ways to help with diverse learning strategies. It has handouts for students who need to read something to understand it. It has multiple demos for students who need to watch to understand something. It also has hands on action for students who need to actually do something to understand it. Lastly, this lesson leaves time for the teachers to walk around and help students one on one, for those who need a little extra attention.
Writing this lesson something that surprised me was that as a teacher you have to anticipate what the students will or will not understand. You need to break things down so that each student will be able to understand. You also need to think about what the students will ask, and answer it before they ask. Since I have never actually taught any high schoolers it is difficult to anticipate what pace they will work at or what they will grasp. I was very surprised and pleased at how different me and Deanna's works are. I like the fact that each student will be able to make a piece that is very unique to their personalities while still learning about gender roles.
