Collage is the process of pasting bits of newspapers, ribbons and other objects onto paper or canvas. It has existed in some form for several hundred years, but the term "collage" was coined by Picasso. Picasso`s initial intention for making collage was to expand upon a 2D picture plane. He felt that painters at the time could capture so much depth and dimension within a painting that it was fooling the viewer. Picasso wanted to physically create this feeling of depth and shadow. Other artists have since adapted this style of creating art. It is a user friendly art making practice that can be done with any materials. From found objects, trash, paper, fabric anything that can be applied to a surface in some way can be used to create a collage. The layering and application of materials in a collage enhances the feeling of form within a 2D plane and creates texture and depth on a canvas. Something that some artists and viewers find very aesthetically appealing.
